"Virtual Ethernet card 'Network adapter 1' is not supported..." when migrating vMA

$

Hi,

We've successfully deployed vMA in our ESX cluster and noticed that when we try to VMotion the virtual machine to another host we get the following warning message:

Virtual Ethernet card 'Network adapter 1' is not supported. This is not a limitation of the host in general, but of the virtual machine's configured guest OS on the selected host.

I've done some research on the web and found this: http://networkadminkb.com/kb/Knowledge%20Base/VMWare/Virtual%20Ethernet%20Adapter%20is%20of%20type%20which%20is%20not%20supported.aspx

..but I don't think it applies to us because this was deployed via OVF and the OS is not Windows 2003.  I know the virtual machine successfully migrates but is there a way to remove this error message if we didn't deploy this incorrectly?

Thanks.

Cronjob

Hi guys,

I got my whole environment up and running, I can manually create backups with ghettoVCBg2.pl and it works perfectly.

Only thing I want to do now, is make it a cronjob.

I tested the cron feature with adding a simple task in /etc/crontab:

*/1 * * * * root wall test

this works fine, every minute I get the message "test" in my console.

I can also add this to /etc/crontab:

*/1 * * * * root /home/vi-admin/test.sh

I made the file test.sh, this is what's in the file:

wall test

again, I get the message "test" in my console.

Now the problem...

When I edit /etc/crontab with this:

*/1 * * * * root /home/vi-admin/ghettoVCBg2.pl --vmlist nag001 --dryrun 1

nothing executes, I als tried to put the command ./ghettoVCBg2.pl --vmlist nag001 --dryrun 1 in a file called test.sh... after that I edited /etc/crontab with:

*/1 * * * * root /home/vi-admin/test.sh

again, nothing executes.

When I look at "sudo nano /etc/crontab" I see:

crond[12611]: module:pam_lsass (root) CMD (/home/vi-admin/test/sh)

crond[12611]: module:pam_lsass pam_sm_acct_mgmt failed login:rooterror code:2

crond[12611]: module:pam_lsass pam_sm_close_session error error code:2

btw: I also tried to edit /etc/crontab with:

*/1 * * * * vi-admin /home/vi-admin/test.sh

and

*/1 * * * * vi-admin /home/vi-admin/ghettoVCBg2.sh --vmlist nag001 --dryrun 1

I'm out of knowledge here...

Tnx in advance

Jim

Create FT on vCenter via cron

I have two host joined to server vCenter 4.1 on 64bit Windows 2008 server. I installed the VMA to manage server hosts and vCenter. VMA join to a domain.
I found a perl script to manage the FT. If execute command:

<host_vMA>$ sudo ftCLI.pl --server <vcenter.domain> --user <domain_admin> --vmname <ft_machine> --operation create

with <domain_admin> password the up FT on <ft_machine>.

If I set this script to do the cron and I set it as follows:

00 22 * * * root sudo -u ump\\administrator /<path>/ftCLI.pl --server <vcenter.domain> --passthroughauth --vmname <ft_machine> --operation create

operation not creation FT. If I login on second console as <domain_admin> operation create FT  on <ft_machine> with the same settings.

What is wrong in my configuration and what I need to change in order to avoid having loging <domain_admin> on second console?

vMA: No virtual machine found

Hi there,

I have trouble with controlling vms with the CLI remote AND the vMA.

I read this problem in other threads, but I don´t find any solution for that.

When I am ask for the inventory with "vmware-cmd -l", I get a list of all vms:

vi-admin@vMa_2011-01-11_11-56-41.jpg

Than, for making it uncomplicated, I copy and paste the first entry and want to get the state:

vi-admin2@vMa_2011-01-11_11-56-41.jpg

Does anyone know this problem??

How can I run the vim-cmd on the ESXi target from vMA?

I need to get some vSwitch specific information like - whether the MAC Address Change, Forged Transmits and Promiscuous Mode policies are set to Accept or reject. I can get the information directly from the host using the vim-cmd. Need to know if I there is a way to run the vim-cmd command from the vMA on the ESXi target to get the vSwitch policies information?

vMA 5.0 Logging?

Hi,

I have setup an esxi 5.0 environment and deployed the linux vcentre appliance as well as the new vma 5.0 appliance. Aside from some password/timezone glitches etc everything seems to be fine.

Because the blades I am testing with use ESXi USB keys, they cannot log locally -- so I would like to use the vma for this... however vilogger gives me "command not found" when executing from within the VMA. Has this changed in version 5? I can find no documentation explaining this.

Thanks

I deployed VMA 5.0 and despite it asking me for Host name during deployment, it still shows as localhost. What's the proper way to change it's name?

SNMP Config allow only a single host to query

Hi,

I enabled via vicfg-snmp from vMA the snmp on my vSphere 5 host. It works pretty fine.

Now I'd like that only one IP is allowed to query my ESXi host. I did not find any option for the vicfg-snmp to set permissions.

What is the correct way to do that ?

vdf equivalent in vSphere 5.0?

$

Hi,

I have installed Nagios on vMA 5.0, which is useful extension of vMA functionality beyond managing UPS (PCNS) or Adaptec RAID (Arcconf). However, I would like to monitor Datastores (warnings on percentages filling is available through vCenter alarms, however when rebooting complex infrastructure it can happen, for instance, that iSCSI storage with backup datastore boots later than ESXi so it is not available for ESXi -and I would like to get warning that datastore is not available to do manual Rescan and eventually boot for instance vDR appliance). I found Nagios plugin check_vmfs, which is basicallyshell script to display datastore free space. However, it uses vdf command (equivalent for Linux df, or disc free, for VMFS), and I didn´t found its equivalent in vSphere/ESXi/vMA 5.0. Prehaps it has moved to ESXCLI. Anybody idea?

Hi all,

I have a vMA 5.0.0.0 installed with PCNS running on it... I have looked around and saw the post about VMtools but I haven't touched VMtools on this app. When I try to use the webportal to update the appliance, it errors out and when I check the logs, the error is:

Not sure what my next action is other than re-deploying :/

vMA 5.1 WebUI not working

Hi,

I can't access to WebUI of vMA. The reason is vami-lighttpd is not listening to the ipv4 address:

netstat -tulpen | grep 5480

tcp        0      0 :::5480                 :::*                    LISTEN      0          6822       3250/vami-lighttpd

Why is this appliance wrongly configured by default and why does nobody else expierence this problem obviously?

And most import: How to correct this issue?

TIA

setting up vMA with AD

Hi,

I am trying to set up vMA and i am up to page 15 of the guide (http://www.vmware.com/support/developer/vima/vma41/doc/vma_41_guide.pdf).

Where it says to go to a windows PC and run this command

ktpass /out foo.keytab /princ foo@VMA-DC.ENG.VMWARE.COM /pass ca... /ptype KRB5_NT_PRINCIPAL -mapuser <vma-dc>\<foo>

replacing <vma-dc> with my domain and foo with the user with permission for the vCenter admin.  My version, if i'm getting it correct, looks like this:

ktpass /out foo.keytab /princ foo@VMA-DC.ENG.VMWARE.COM /pass ca... /ptype KRB5_NT_PRINCIPAL -mapuser ampco.com.au\administrator

which returns

DsCrackNames returned 0x2 in the name entry for ampco.com.au\administrator.

and no file

any hints as to what i am doing wrong?

Thanks

Ian

vilogger authentication failure in vMA 4.1

$

I have multiple ESXi 4.1 hosts and have setup a vMA 4.1. I have added all hosts with authentication fast pass, using vifp addserver. I can connect to individual target host and it works fine. I have also enable vilogger to collect logs from all server. After vilogger enable, it created folders for each host and copied log files under those folders. It all looked fine at this point.

Next day when I went back to check whether it was still collecting log files i found that all hosts had "Authentication Failure" for status. If I disable and enable vilogger, the status goes from scheduled to collecting to Authentication Failure.

can some body help me. thanks.
