I just upgraded vMA to 5.1.0.2 and can no longer connect to other hosts via SSH:

ssh: symbol lookup error: ssh: undefined symbol: FIPS_mode

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Thanks,

vMA unable to join domain (Unresolved Domain Name)

It looks like I might be the only one having this problem.

I've recently installed the vMA appliance and used this PDF as an installation guide:

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/topic/com.vmware.ICbase/PDF/vma_55_guide.pdf

The Domain controller is a Windows 2008 R2.

The vMA server is vSphere 5.5.0.3 Build 2301366

(vMA was updated to this version immediately after the install via the web interface)

Following the instruction to join the local domain that vcenter is on I ran this command:

sudo domainjoin-cli --loglevel verbose --log . join <my_domain> Administrator

(I added the loglevel and log argument after experiencing the problem in order to provide better error details below)

This is the relevant error that it produces:

20150505005817:INFO:Checking status of daemon [/etc/init.d/lsassd]

20150505005817:INFO:Daemon [/etc/init.d/lsassd]: status [3]

20150505005817:INFO:Getting DC

20150505005817:ERROR:Lsass Error [CENTERROR_DOMAINJOIN_UNRESOLVED_DOMAIN_NAME]

0x9CAC - Failed to lookup the domain controller for given domain. Check that the domain name is correctly entered. Check that your DNS server is reachable, and that your system is configured to use DNS in nsswitch. Check that port 389 UDP is not blocked by your firewall.

I can ping my PDC and the PDC can ping the vMA server.

No firewall was installed or any other software for that matter and I am able to add other servers to the domain with no problem.

What should I be looking for here?

Thanks for any info.

Failed to check for updates Error downloading manifest. Please contact your vendor. couldn't connect to host URL

Hello,

I am trying to patch JRE to 1.7.0_76 on our vMA per this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2112648

Our vMA does not have internet connectivity so I am used the section under the KB for  'Updating Existing vMA Installation by Using tar.gz Update Bundle'

My vMA's web files (.xml and .html files) were located under /opt/vmware/share/htdocs

I made a /repo directory there and extracted the tar file to the /opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo directory.

In the vMA web client under Settings, I saved the repository url as https://ip-address-of-vma:5480/opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo

After clicking the 'Check Updates' button I get the following error:

Failed to check for updates(Error downloading manifest. Please contact your vendor. couldn't connect to host URL: https://ip-address-of-vma/opt/vmware/share/htdocs/repo/manifest/manifest-latest.xml) on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 12:56:09 PM GMT-04:00

I contacted VMware Support and they noted VMware Communities is the only place that supports vMA.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Also the root file system has mysterious run out of space since I extracted this patch for JRE 1.7.0_76.

How to handle "target datastore is full" errors?

$

Hi all,

we managed to run ghettoVCBg2 on vSphere 6.0 and vMA 6.0.

Unfortunately our backup datastore reached it's maximum capacity resulting in failing backups (e.g. the large VMDK files are missing).

There are no error or debug messages in ghettoVCBg2's log file.

How can we handle this (besides monitoring the target backup datastore and providing sufficient storage space ;-)?

vifs supports only "--dir <remotedir>" but that does not show the size of the files living in <remotedir>.

What would be the best approach after backup to check if all files made it to the backup target datastore?

Thanks for any hints!

Running 3rd Party RAID Management Commands?

$

Hi All,

When I SSH directly in to one of my hosts, there's a command set available to manage/monitor the RAID called promise-raid-cli. I can access this simply by typing promise-raid-cli and this opens a new set of command options to me.

I am trying to use the vMA, and target an ESXi host directly and run this command but it says not found. How come? Should this act as if I am at the shell locally?

I even went as far a finding out exactly where this file was on the ESXi system, it's /sbin/promise-raid-cli, from the vMA and on a specific ESXi target, I did a cd /sbin/ then promise-raid-cli and I still get nothing. I even do an LS and it's not listed. However an LS on the local ESXi shell shows this file.

Why can't the vMA run or see this command?

Creating a cron job

Hello all,

I'm using the VMware Health Check v0.9.4 script by William Lam. The script works great from the VIMA appliance but when I try to setup a cron job it does not execute.

Here are the contents of my crontab file;

PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin

MAILTO=root

HOME=/

I'm sure it is something simple. BTW - Thanks for a great script William!!

Boot issues with VMA 4.1 on DL360 G5 with ESX 3.5u5

$

I thought I'd add this one as a datapoint, as I've googled high and low without finding much relevant info.

We have a setup with two DL360 G5 running ESX 3.5u5 and all current patches as of christmas. For some reason the VMA 4.1 appliance will not boot on these machines. I have checked the BIOS for the VT/Nx setup, I have had the machines powered off and on, I have ran the vt.iso tool that confirms I'm all good. The machines have an up to date BIOS (and other firmware).

The kernel that VMA 4.1 ships with is buggy with regards to booting in 64-bit mode on ESX 3.5 (maybe other versions, haven't tested). On this set of hosts it does shortly after the GRUB boot loader kicks off the kernel.

The magic solution? Install the VMA on another host that works (I accidentally have a few G6's laying about), make sure you get yum to update CentOS kernel, and move it back onto the DL360 G5's. Works like a charm.

HP System Management Homepage in vMA

$

Hello!

I've read that it is possible to install hardware agents in vMA. I would need HP System Management Homepage and the Compaq Array Configuration Utility. Can I use the Linux versions or those for ESX 4/4.1?

As they interact directly with the hardware, do I need to have one vMA on every ESXi?

Thank you very much for your help!

With fastpass some commands work, some don't

$

I'm using vMA 5.1 with Active Directory fastpass enabled.

This command works, without asking any password (fastpass is ok):

vma:~[testvcenter1.mydomain.local]> esxcli -h esxi-e1b1.mydomain.local storage nmp satp rule list

but this doesn't work:

vma:~[testvcenter1.mydomain.local]> esxcli -h esxi-e1b1.mydomain.local  storage nmp satp rule add -s "VMW_SATP_ALUA" -P "VMW_PSP_RR" -O iops=100 -c "tpgs_on" -V "TEST_VE" -M "VV" -e "TEST rule description"

It fails with the error "Must specify a server name". The same command works if I use "-s" instead of "-h", *but* it requires user credentials.

What's the reason?

How to install VDDK 1.1 on vMA 4.0 (libfuse.so.2 fix)

$

For those of you that might be interested in installing and giving Virtual Disk Development Kit 1.1 a try on VMware vMA, you may run into an issue with the following:

The following libraries could not be found on your system:

libfuse.so.2

Here is the procedure on remediating the issue and getting VDDK 1.1 installed

1. Download VDDK 1.1 ( VMware-vix-disklib-1.1.0-163495.x86_64.tar.gz ) and upload to your vMA host

2. Extract the contents

tar -zxvf VMware-vix-disklib-1.1.0-163495.x86_64.tar.gz

3. Download libfuse.so.2 rpm package for RHEL 5 (http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/4/idpl/9551023/com/libfuse-2.7.4-1.el5.pp.x86_64.rpm.html) and upload to your vMA host. You can actually do this in one step using curl found on vMA:

curl -O ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/ftp.pramberger.at/systems/linux/contrib/rhel5/x86_64/libfuse-2.7.4-1.el5.pp.x86_64.rpm

4. Install the rpm dependancy

[vi-admin@inTheGhetto ~]$ sudo rpm -ivh libfuse-2.7.4-1.el5.pp.x86_64.rpm
warning: libfuse-2.7.4-1.el5.pp.x86_64.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 6971f6ac
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]   1:libfuse                ########################################### [100%]

5. cd into VDDK 1.1 extracted directory

cd vmware-vix-disklib-distrib/

6. Install VDDK 1.1 and accept the EULA and default installation in /usr

[vi-admin@inTheGhetto vmware-vix-disklib-distrib]$ sudo ./vmware-install.pl

Now both vmware-mount and vmware-vdiskmanager will work without complaining about the missing libfuse.so.2

I would hope in the future that all side toolkits/products will be compatible with vMA without any additional research/package dependency. I disklike the fact that users must go out to the net to find patches/packages to satisfy a VMware product installation. I know that vApp's produced by VMware are highly customized to fit a specific need and I prefer that all dependency's are covered without having end-users potentially download unsupported/unknown packages onto these vApps.

It would also be awesome to include with vMA: VMware VIX, VDDK, etc.
