Adding users as vifp users

Is there a way to allow individual users to use vifp (fastpass).  When I add users and try to run commands under them I get the error "This is not the vifp user"

For audit reasons I want to have each admin log in as themselves and run commands and scripts but I don't see where I can do that.

Thanks!

resxtop vMA 4.1

Hi

Yesterday I installed a clean vMA 4.1. When I call resxtop to a ESXi 4.0 host and tries to see the storage (disk) VM resource utilization screen an empty screen comes up, like there are no VM's running on the host. There is no problem in the cpu, mem and other disk screens.

Does anyone have the same problem and are there any fixes/workarounds?

I have not tested againts any ESXi 4.1 hosts btw.

VMA 4.0 cpu comatibility

Hi guys,

i have a problem that i faced in my home lab that i am not able to run "vmware FT" and "VMA 4x". my system configuration is "amd quad 9650" cpu and "asus m3n68am" motherboard. i came to know that, this processor is not compatible for FT and VMA. according to the vmware recommandations we need "amd optron" series processors to run FT and VMA. so that i want to upgrade my cpu and mother board.

So, please suggest me that cpu models that supports both FT and VMA for my Home LAB. no matter if that is Intel or amd.

so please help me in this regard.

Thanks in advance

How to change keyboard in vMA5?

$

This post is actually a follow-up to my thread at http://communities.vmware.com/thread/318603 but I think I'd better start a new discussion.

First, a little summary:

In vMA 4.1, it was possible to press any key to interrupt the automatied boot (blue screen), enter 'a' to modify kernel string and add 'single' at the end of the string and at boot up, run nano /etc/sysconfig/keyboard to change the keyboard.

But in vMA 5.0, it is no longer possible to do so!  So, what could we do?  This is particularly troublesome for non-English keyboard users since VMware engineers now require a stronger password policy but how are we supposed to enter a GOOD password if we can "see" what we are typing?

VMware should really send its engineers to internationalisation courses and make them write the following passage five times a day:

  • English is only one language in the world
  • At most only 15% of the world's computer users are using English keyboard

ESXi 4.1, APC PCNS 3 and vMA5

Has anyone got ESXi 4.1 running with APC PCNS 3 and vMA5 to shut the VM's down gracefully?

I have installed the required patch (in the correct order) for vMA 5/PCNS 3 as listed on the APC website.  From what I can tell PCNS (on the vMA5 appliance) is talking to the APC NMC, the problem is when the UPS starts a graceful shutdown.  An error is generated, the error disappears too quickly to log, and the ESXi host/VM's are terminated - but not gracefully.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

Startup Problem with vMA5

Hello,

I am attempting to startup a new deployemnt of vMA5 in a ESXi5 vm. I followed the getting-started section of the doc in the vMA5 guide, so I first performed the OVF deployment from vSPhere Client (not sure I had all the deployment values correct).

When starting the vm for the first time (as per the Configure vMA at First Boot section), I almost immediately got the error message seen in attachment vMA Startup Error.png.

Not knowing about IP Pools, I found that I could create one (or attempt to) at a Data Center level from vSphere Client. However, I very quickly bogged down in attempted the configuration (see NewIPPoolProperties.png). Specifically, I did not know what to supply for Subnet, Gateway, nor (after selecting Enable IP Pool checkbox) Ranges.

Additionally, I do not know what other items need to be chosen in the other tabs (if any).

I would be grateful for any help in getting this resolved. Thanks!

vMA 4.1 and non-standard vCenter port

I just set up vMA 4.1, everything is working fine, even got AD auth working.  However, when I try to run a command as an AD user, I get this:

[vi-admin@vma01 ~][vcenter01]$ esxcfg-mpath -l --vihost esxhost4.globalivewireless.local
Enter username: domain\domainadminacct
Enter password:
Error connecting to server at 'https://vcenter01/sdk/webService': Connection refused

Don't see much in the logs.

However, if I try to connect to that URL, it fails - this is because we connect to vCenter using 30443.  The vifp addtarget with --portnumber specified works (doesn't work without the port specified), but it seems standard commands still try to use 443.

Is there any way to change the default nature of using 443 to our non-standard port?

vma 5 root account

i am trying to enable vma 5 root account.  I've followed same procedure as with vma 4.1 - root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash is set in etc/passwd and a password has been set for root account.  When i logout and login to vma and try to put that password in i get access denied.  There apparently are still things that vi-admin cannot do(like change hostname and access to apps etc..)so that is why i'm needing root.  Is there a different procedure to enable root in vma 5

PCNS 3.1 in vMA for ESXi 5.5 in HA with 2 different UPS models

Hello, I have following configuration: 1. floor - ESXi host A with several VM’s (HP VSA, Windows and Linux) - ESXi host B with free vSphere hypervisor license (will be changed to Essential) with vCenter and vMA installed - Smart UPS (Model: Smart-UPS 5000 RM with NMC: AP9617) 2. floor - ESXi host C with several VM’s (HP VSA, Windows and Linux) - Smart UPS (Model: Smart-UPS RT 5000 XL with NMC: AP9631) ESXi host A and ESXi host C are in HA. I tried to configure PCNS (OVA) on vMA and choose Advanced (VM Migration Support) in UPS configuration page. I added two IP addresses for two UPS but then I got this error - All UPS's in this Configuration must be the same model. So what is the solution for esxi hosts in HA cluster with VM migration enabled if I have two "different" UPS and I want correct shutdown and start for all VM's and hosts? (other one then buy new UPS...) Thanks

HDVM-VMA combination to auto create storage

$

Hello,

One of the forum postings explained the procedure to deploy VMA, install Hitachi Device Manager and use this combination to obtain information.

Can this scenario be handled using the VMA-HDVM combination?

1) A eager-zeroed thick volume is mapped from a Hitachi VSP to the hypervisor

2) VMDKs have been carved out of this volume

3) If more capacity is required and the existing volume does not have sufficient free space, another volume of a specific size is automatically created on the VSP and mapped to ESX which will carve out VMDKs on this volume and allocate it to the VMs

If this is possible, I would like the high level set of steps to accomplish this task. Pointers to docs will be especially helpful.

In the meantime, I will be looking at the VMA documentation.

Thanks

How to allow selected domain users to login to VMA??

hi guys,

Anyone aware of any method to allow restrictive access to VMA? If I want to allow specific set of AD users to be able to login to VMA how can it be acheived?

I believe creating AD security group and adding that group to VMA would be the way to go but as VMA is basically Linux, I am unsure where or what to edit on VMA to make this happen?

Any good instructions on this would be helpful.

thank you,

ESXi and VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA)

$

We are a care home company looking to virtualise our environment using ESXi 4.1. I need to connect the ESXi running on a DELL poweredge R610 to a UPS. I have downloaded the new VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA), installed it and verified that it can connect to the ESXi via the ESXi client interface. My next task is to install the vmtools on vMA, but the instructions on how to do this not very clear to me.

Tried the following steps from Dell_ UPS Management Software Installation and Configuration User's Guide

  • Insert the VMware server installation CD. (is this the free iso download for ESXi install?)

  • Go to \VMware\RPMS to locate the VMware Tools installation package. (Where do I do this, in the vMA console from the ESXi client interface?)

  • Log in to the guest operating system from the virtual machine console (I guess this is the vMA)
  • ·         Select the template name and then right-click and select Install/Upgrade VMware Tools from the menu. (I selected the first option, from two given)

  • Mount the CD with the command: using mount /dev/cdrom /mnt (vi-admin is not allowed to use this command, has to be root?)

Needless to say I have NOT made much progress from these instructions so far, can someone please help me. I have attached doc that has the instructions.

Why can't I install gcc or git in vMA 5.0.0's SLES 11

$

I'd like to build some 3rd party software and have it available as a service in vMA 5.0. The source is in a git repository and would require gcc (among other things) to build it on the VMware SLES 11 Guest OS in vMA 5.0.

Unfortunately, no matter what I try (zypper, rpm, yast2 -i) I can't get the packages (or patterns), which I want/need to have, to install on this system. They all seem to have dependencies that for some reason can't be fulfilled on VMware SLES 11, ex.

For git:

git-1.7.3.4-3.6.x86_64 requires git-core = 1.7.3.4, but this requirement cannot be provided

                    uninstallable providers: git-core-1.7.3.4-3.6.i586[opensuse]

                                                          git-core-1.7.3.4-3.6.x86_64[opensuse]

For git-core:

git-core-1.7.3.4-3.6.x86_64 requires perl-base = 5.12.3, but this requirement cannot be provided

                    uninstallable providers: perl-base-5.12.3-11.14.1.i586[opensuse]

                                                          perl-base-5.12.3-11.14.1.x86_64[opensuse]

For gcc:

gcc-4.5-19.1.x86_64 requires gcc45, but this requirement cannot be provided

                    uninstallable providers: gcc45-4.5.1_20101208-9.8.i586[opensuse]

                                                          gcc45-4.5.1_20101208-9.8.x86_64[opensuse]

For gcc45:

gcc45-4.5.1_20101208-9.8.x86_64 requires libgcc1 >= 4.5.1_20101208-9.8, but this requirement cannot be provided

                    uninstallable providers: libgcc45-4.5.1_20101208-9.8.i586[opensuse]

                                                          libgcc45-4.5.1_20101208-9.8.x86_64[opensuse]

I don't know what the problem is here.

  • Doesn't yast support installing multiple versions of packages?
  • Do I need to include other repositories? If so, which ones?
  • Am I missing some fundamental concept?
  • Did VMware break this on purpose? If so, why?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

cli remote shutdown command not working anymore on esxi 5.1 ?

$

Hello everybody

i'm with the free version of esxi 5.1 and i try to create a ups shutdown script to power off gracefully my vm and my host.

On the previous version (5.0) i used the following command which always worked:

c:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>vicfg-hostops.pl --server 192.0.0.1 --username root --password password --operation shutdown –force

Now with esxi 5.1 , this command is not allowed anymore and return the following error :

SOAP Fault:

-----------

Fault string: Current license or ESXi version prohibits execution of the requested operation.

Fault detail: RestrictedVersionFault

Vmware has updated their api and now the esxcli command must be used instead

c:\Program Files\VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin>esxcli.exe -s 192.0.0.1 -u root -p password system shutdown poweroff -d 10 -r "test shutdown"
System is not in maintenance mode. Cannot perform requested operation.

I cannot force the shutdown anymore and let the auto poweroff of the vm operate.

Maintenance mode cannot be set until all vm are powered down , and i did not find proper cli command.

Does anyone have written a script for that?

VMA Build 1062361 not pingable

Hi,

I am trying to deploy a VMA to help on my VCAP-DCA exam.  I have gone through, and deployed the virtual machine from the ovf file.  I also went into edit the settings of the VM, under the Options tab to disable the vApp Options.

I have then gone though and configured the VM to have an ip address of 192.168.104.75.  I put in the subnet mask, gateway ect. When I log into the machine it can only ping it's own address and not the default gateway.  I have verified that the Virtual Network is up and working.  Other VMs on the 192.168.104.x address have no problems getting out or talking to each other.

Any idea's?  I am not a huge linux guy, but I am sure this will be a good learning experience for me.

vMA 5.5 will not function

I installed the new release of vMA 5.5 and configured the IP address and network configuration through the console on the vm.  When I try to open my browser and browse the site it sits for a while and then says page cannot be displayed.  If I try to connect via SSH it cannot connect.  I can ping the vMA machine as well as ping from it to other servers on the network.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Error contacting apcupsd @ localhost:3551: Connection refused

Good day! Faced with a trouble while trying to setup apcupsd on vMA. Here is config: /etc/apcupsd/apcupsd.conf:

UPSCABLE ether

UPSTYPE snmp

DEVICE 10.99.64.254:apc:public #(this is IP-address of my Smart UPS)

NETSERVER on

NISPORT 3551 (#and this is a port by default)

But when I'm trying to connect to UPC I receive this error:

Error contacting apcupsd @ localhost:3551: Connection refused

So this is looks like problem is in iptables. But there is no any restriction in iptables of this machine (SUSE 11 based):

sudo iptables -t filter -nvL

Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 113 packets, 11906 bytes)

pkts bytes target     prot opt in     out     source               destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT 0 packets, 0 bytes)

pkts bytes target     prot opt in     out     source               destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT 22 packets, 4468 bytes)

pkts bytes target     prot opt in     out     source               destination

Can you give me advice what should I check? Thank you.
