Manage snapshots with vMA

$

Hi,

Is there any way in which I could manage VM snapshots using vMA? I'm using the command "vmware-cmd" but I see no option to LIST the snapshots and revert to a specific one.

I can only get the command to show me in a boolean fashion if the VM has snapshots, remove them or revert to the last one.

Thanks in advance!

Perl Metric Scripting Question

$

0

To start, ultimately, I want these (among other metrics which I have already written the script to collect) to go into a CSV file.

I would like to grab the names of the datacenters, and then the number of hosts and VMs in each. There isn't any built in metric for any of those... spitting out the datacenter names is a matter of grabbing them, but how can I get the number of hosts and VMs in each datacenter? Is the best way with some sort of funky (I'd guess for) loop?

Also, is there an easy way to only grab certain metrics (performance counters)? Like if I wanted to ONLY grab the total CPU usage what is the best way to approach that without letting the user specify in the opts?

Sorry if some of these questions are horrible, I just started working with vMA and I may not completely understand the API yet... haven't finished all the documentation (there seems to be quite a lot of it!).

vMA 4.1 prompting for credentials on target (AD joined ESXi and vMA)

I'm trying to get vMA 4.1 to talk to my ESXi 4.1 host all using Active Directory.  I've joined my ESXi host to AD, I've joined my vMA to AD, but after I set my vMA target and try to run a command against that host it asks for username and password and nothing I put in is accepted.  I've added my AD account to the administrator role on the particular ESXi host.

I've been scouring the net for something and none of the blogs mention this happening.  I do see domain admin mentioned in a couple places, but I don't have that permission and won't in my environment.  I wouldn't think that matters as long as I manually add my account to the ESXi host.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks!

Resxtop with VMA 4.1 batch mode capture not opening in perfmon

I've created an hour long batch capture using resxtop with the following command:

resxtop -b -n 720 --server servername.domain > vmacapture.csv

However when I add the Data Source to perfmon I get:

"Data Source C:\filename.csv is either invavlid or cannot be found. System message: The specified log file type has not been installed on this system.

I completed another small capture earlier, 9 iterations and that loaded fine.

I've tried capturing more batches, 3 more attempts of 2 minutes but all of them come up with the same error..

Any ideas on why this is failing? I can open the data in excel fine...

The vSphere Client is showing that VMware Tools is not installed.  Does the VMA need VMware Tools?  The vSphere Client Install/Upgrade VMware Tools is not working?  I assume I have to do a manual install?

New vMA v6 Server Error(s) Running an ESXCLI command: Connect failed. Server SHA1 thumbprint (not trusted)

New vMA v6 server. Added two, new ESXi v6 hosts to the vMA with no issues. When I change target to one of these new hosts, and try to run " esxcli system syslog reload ", I receive the error: Connect failed. Server SHA1 thumbprint [thumb print listed here] (not trusted).

Research tells me what to do if I get this error running and ESXCLI command on my PC, but nothing about when it happens in the vMA.

Any help is appreciated folks - thanks!

how to get vmci socket work in vMA?

$

The vMA VM can start and listen on vmci socket after I enabled it in the VM setting. However, the other VMs can't connect to the vMA's vmci socket CID. The same program works when I tried to connect one regular VM to another regular VM.

Is it possible vMA doesn't have vmci driver installed properly? For some reason, the vmware-tool is installed, but it doesn't have vmci directory under /usr/lib/vmware-tools.

PCNS doesn't work after upgrade VMA

Hello,

I use PCNS 3.0.1 on Vsphere ESXi 5.0.1 and VMA to shutdown the VM's and the host in case of a power outage. Last week I upgraded VMA 5.0.0 to the latest version 5.0.0.1 (not really an upgrade, but a fresh install). Unfortunately the automatic shutdown doesn't work anymore.

When I run the shutdown script, it seems the relevant ESXi host can't be find or it isn't being managed by the VMA. Then I tried a complete fresh install of all components, but the problem stays.

Anybody who recognizes this problem? Solution for now is to stick with VMA 5.0.0

UPS Shutdown script for VM`s (vMA). ESXi 5.5

Hi! Anyone, help me, please. I have vMA 5.5 with conneсtions to some servers, ESXi 5.5 Update 2, APC UPS`s together with servers, customized NUT - software for work with UPS. Purpose is shutdown virtual machines, when electricity is switched off, then UPS`s begin to work. I need a test script for my ESXI that can does it, like these.

ghettoUPSHostShutdown.pl

ESX/ESXi APC/APCUPSD Host Shutdown VI Perl Toolkit Script (ghettoShutdown.pl/upsVIShutdown.pl) -- [ DEPRECATED ]

But there are old scripts for ESXi Version 3.5 or 4 and when I launch these, my Perl doesn`t work, giving an error.

Screenshot_1.png

Probably it`s a conflict between versions. I can`t update my Perl too, because SUSE find system files, which interfer to update (picture 2).

Screenshot_2.png

Do you know, where I can find shutdown script for my ESXi version? I couldn`t found it in the Internet.

I've successfully joined vMA to AD domain, however AD users can login to appliance only using local console (login: class\Administrator) but not using ssh.

Here is example:

login as: Administrator@class.local@vma1

Welcome to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3 for VMware  (x86_64) - Kernel \r (\l).

Using keyboard-interactive authentication.

Hi.

I need add 3 hosts to vMA.I dont have domain controller.

1. I deploy fresh vMA from OVF and configure IP and password for vi-admin.

2. Add first ESX01 host with success. ( vifp addserver esx02 --authpolicy fpauth )

3. Added second and third ESXi finish with fail.(commands bellow)

vi-admin@vma02:~> vifp addserver esx02 --authpolicy fpauth

root@esx02's password:

vi-admin@vma02:~> vifp listservers

esx02.localdomain       ESXi

vi-admin@vma02:~> vifp addserver esx03 --authpolicy fpauth

root@esx03's password:

Error: Failed to add users

in vSphere client we can see something that:

vma01.png

During above tasks is creating vi-user and next vi-admin. After several seconds vi-admin is removed(i dont know why...)

In which logs can i find something more ?

var/log/vmkernel.log on host is not clear for me... but if somebody will ask i will paste.

What should i do more ? i want only add 3 esxi servers to vMA and next login to those esxi without puting passwords.

Interesting is when i deployed next vMA02 and VM03 i can only add one esxi to vMA. During adding Second and third esxi generate that same errors... Now i have 1 vMA for each host .....

Please about suggestion and help.... because my adventure with vMA is not good... last time i was problem with this vMA 5.5 The session is not authenticated after connect to target ESXi and dont resolved this in my second lab...

Hi,

If I run resxtop on vma6.5 I get the following error message:

Anyone else seen this?  Is there a workaround?

Hello guys, i got an error when i add exi server (6.7) in vma 6.5.

vifp addserver fails with error failed to add user

This my first post to this forum as I could not find answer through Google search. If I do not use correct terminology or fail to provide full information, please pardon me. I am not an expert on VMWare, just a curious tech enthusiast. I find VMWare to be a very exciting product and easy to use. The VMWare knowledge base is excellent and so is the user community.

I have home setup of free VMWare ESXi 6.0 on Dell T420 and T110 II servers. I recently tested vMA 5 by installing it as a VM on one of the servers. I watched the Youtube tutorial on how to use vifp to add servers. I have setup networking etc. on vMA and it works fine. Auto update worked. When I issues the command sudo vifp addserver 192.168.250.96, I am prompted for the password. When I enter the password, I get an error Error: failed to add users. I have checked the log file at /var/opt/vmware/vma/vifpd.log and the most descriptive message is:

addserver: Error occurred while adding users for 192.168.250.96 ..rolling back. An error occurred while creating users on 192.168.250.96

Then I noticed that since I am using the vMA console to run these commands, as soon as the error occurs, I see that in the bottom area, under Recent Tasks, I see an error: general system error occurred: weak password. The error detail says:

vMA Error 1.JPG

Weak password: not enough different characters or classes.

Now, my password is pretty strong. I cannot post it here but I will post a similar password:

4518Gabdhjg#01

It is 14 characters and has numbers, uppercase letter, lowercase letters and special character. I have read the VMWare documentation on passwords and to me, the password looks just fine. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Arun Gupta
