Hi all,
I've just added a host to my vCenter that doesn't have any local storage save the SD card it boots ESXi from. Its giving me a configuration error in vsphere client saying that syslog is not configured. I assume I'm seeing this on this particular server and nowhere else becase there is no writable local storage. So, I did a little research and foudn this article:
http://www.simonlong.co.uk/blog/2010/05/28/using-vma-as-your-esxi-syslog-server/
This looked like a good option since I was going to install the Vma for a different reason anyway. So, I have it installed now and working (I'm using the 4.1 Vma on ESXi 4.1U2 hosts and 4.1 vCenter), and I was getting ready to point this particular server at it, but I have questions...
First, the logs that this service collects are really for VMware tech support to troubleshoot issues, correct? There's no performance data going here I'm assuming. If thats the case, then are the default parameters adaquate for the vilogger? If I point this server here, and all goes well, is there any benefit to me if I point my other hosts to it, or is local storage preferred for logging so long as it exists?
I guess what I'm saying here is that I get the "why", but I'm a little fuzzy on the "how". Anyone out there using this that can give me some pointers?
Thanks
